Yesterday we saw the breaking news that the Government plan to top up employees salaries following the closure of the Furlough scheme (Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme); in fear of mass redundancies across the UK.
This is fantastic news. The BBC reported that the scheme will come into force on 1st November and will top up salaries, providing employees are working a 3rd of their hours. This is a top up to their existing salaries, and not to be confused with a top up to a full time salary when they are contracted to work part time.
Tjhis emergency job protection scheme does not prevent companies from making redundancies, but will help some to avoid them. Redundancies can still take place, but we would always recommend talking to a HR expert first.
