You work so hard on designing a great advert, arranging interviews and then decide to make an offer. Then radio silence. The offer letter goes out, but now you can’t get hold of the candidate and they don’t respond to your emails. It makes it almost impossible to carry out all the recruitment checks and references.
Why Does This Happen?
This is very common for a lot of companies. There’s a number of reasons why this may be:
1. It could be because you are competing against another offer they may received.
2. It could be that they are not true fans of your business and therefore an offer isn’t very important to them.
3. They could be a ‘flaky’ individual.
4. They are not very tech savvy and if you sent the offer digitally, then they may not understand how to accept the offer.
5. Or they have suddenly realised the role isn’t right for them but they don’t know how to tell you.
How do you overcome this problem?
You need to be more effective at your questioning during the recruitment interview.
You should be asking questions like ‘Why did you apply for the role?’, ‘Are you applying for other jobs or have had an offer from another company?’, ‘What do you like most about our company?’, ‘What would motivate you when you are working for us?’, and ‘How good are your IT skills on a scale of 1-10?’.
If most answers start and finest with ‘I don’t know’, then they are not truly engaged with your business and you should not waste your time appointing them.
Why? Statistics show that when an employee isn’t a true ‘fan’ 🤚 of your business from the start, you won’t retain them for very long as they will be looking for the next opportunity and this is a costly mistake for you. Its previous ⏰ wasted and you will need to need start the recruitment process again.
